The problem
$101B lost to return abuse and fraud — in one year.
That's 13.7% of all merchandise returned by US shoppers. Generous return policies built trust — then a minority learned to farm them.Source: NRF & Appriss Retail, 2023 Consumer Returns in the Retail Industry report.
Wardrobing
They buy the $180 coat, wear it to the event, and send it back. Your margin pays for their weekend.
Serial returning
A small slice of customers returns at 3–5x your store average — ordering is free entertainment for them.
Multi-identity abuse
Same address, fresh email, clean history. Classic blocklists never see them coming.

Every customer gets a 0–100 score from five published signals: +35 if their return rate exceeds 3x your store average (+20 above 2x), +15 for wardrobing ($75+ items returned within 7 days of delivery), +15 when one address is shared by 2+ customer emails, +10 for average keep-times under 10 days, and +10 when over 80% of lifetime spend has been refunded. No black boxes — you see every contributing signal.
It adds a returnabuse:store-credit-only tag and a dated policy note to the customer in Shopify via the Admin API — the real maximum Shopify allows, because there is no Admin API mutation that restricts a customer's checkout payment methods. Your team then issues store credit instead of refunds for that customer at return time. For hard, automatic enforcement, pair it with a Shopify Flow rule — we'll guide you through the setup.
Read access to orders, returns and customers (scopes: read_orders, read_returns, read_customers). Write access is limited to customer tags and notes (scope: write_customers). We never touch payment credentials, and we never sell or share your store data.
No. Only statistical outliers are flagged — customers returning at multiples of your store average — and nothing happens automatically. Every action is a one-click decision you make, the flag threshold is adjustable, and flags are reversible in one click.
Shopify's fraud analysis targets payment fraud at checkout — stolen cards, risky IPs. ReturnAbuse Radar targets post-purchase abuse: the customer who pays legitimately, then systematically exploits your return policy for months. Different problem, different signals.
Yes. Billing is monthly through the Shopify App Store, so uninstalling the app stops all future charges immediately. You can export your blocklist and flagged-customer data before you go.
